Journey With Musa
In the history of Islamic tradition, there is a special account involving a young companion who traveled alongside Prophet Musa. While the Qur’an describes a journey to the meeting point of the two seas, it does not name this companion directly. However, classical Islamic tradition and scholars have identified this young person as Yusha ibn Nun. This identification is significant because it highlights a time when Yusha was not yet a leader of a nation, but a student and a helper. He was a seeker of knowledge who observed a great prophet closely, showing that every major responsibility begins with a period of learning and service. This is a vital lesson for children: to become a leader, one must first learn how to follow, how to listen, and how to serve others with a sincere heart.
❓ Who is the young companion from Surah Al-Kahf identified as in Islamic tradition?
During this journey described in Surah Al-Kahf, Yusha assisted Musa by carrying the necessary provisions for their trip. The account mentions a fish that was part of their supplies, which eventually served as an important sign from Allah for their mission. By being present during such extraordinary events, Yusha was experiencing a journey built around patience and the pursuit of wisdom. Islamic scholarship emphasizes that he was a student during this time, learning the value of attention and the importance of following directions carefully. For children, this illustrates that even small tasks, like carrying a bag or looking after supplies, are part of a larger path toward growth and future responsibility. Every moment spent in the company of the wise is an opportunity to gain insights that cannot be found in books alone.
❓ For which person was the sun held back by Allah’s permission?
This period of Yusha’s life as a student is one of the reasons his story is so unique. Before he was tasked with leading others, he spent his time observing a prophet’s character and patience. This teaches us that leadership is not about rushing to the front, but about preparing oneself through dedication and observation. In our own lives, when we listen to our teachers, help our parents, or pay attention to those who have more experience than us, we are following in the footsteps of this tradition. By being a faithful companion, Yusha learned the discipline required for the challenges he would face later. It reminds us that seeking knowledge is a noble journey that requires us to be humble and ready to help whenever we are needed.
❓ What did Yusha want his followers to avoid when starting an important task?

The Sun Held Back
Following the era of Musa, Islamic sources describe Yusha ibn Nun as the leader of Bani Isra’il. It is during this period of his leadership that one of the most remarkable signs granted by Allah occurred. As he led a campaign toward Bayt al-Maqdis, a truly extraordinary event took place involving the passage of time and the movement of the heavens. An authentic hadith report from Abu Hurayrah confirms that the sun was held back from setting for Yusha during this journey. This report states that the sun was not held back for any human being except for him. This event stands as a clear sign of Allah’s support and is recognized by Muslim scholars as a unique miracle granted to him by the permission of the Creator.
❓ What lesson do we learn from Yusha finishing the work Musa started?
It is important to understand the lesson behind this miracle. The story is not about a human being having independent power over nature. Rather, it is a powerful demonstration that Allah alone controls the sun, the earth, the stars, and time itself. When Allah wills for something extraordinary to happen to aid His servants, the normal patterns of the world can change by His command. For children, this serves as a reminder that victory and success are ultimately in the hands of Allah. When we work hard and trust in Him, we recognize that He is the One who makes all things possible, even when they seem impossible according to the laws of nature. This sign was a testament to the importance of the mission and the support provided by the Creator.
This miracle of the sun being held back is the strongest confirmed sign associated with Yusha ibn Nun in authentic reports. By focusing on this specific event, we learn about the greatness of Allah’s power and His ability to change the circumstances of the world for His faithful servants. It encourages us to have a deep sense of awe and respect for the Creator who governs the universe. When we think about the sun staying in the sky, we should think about how Allah’s permission is required for every moment to pass. It teaches us that no matter how difficult a situation might seem, Allah is in control, and He can provide ease and timing in ways we might never expect.

Focus Before the Mission
Reports connected with the leadership of Yusha emphasize the importance of discipline and full attention when undertaking a major task. It is mentioned that for a specific campaign, he sought individuals who were not distracted by unfinished personal concerns. This included people who were in the middle of building a house but had not yet finished it, those who had just married, or those who were waiting for their animals to give birth. The point of this was not to say that building a home, getting married, or caring for animals are bad things. In fact, these are all important parts of life. The lesson is that certain significant missions require a person to be fully present and focused without their mind being pulled away by other worries.
This teaching provides a great reflection for us today regarding how we approach our own goals. Whether it is our daily prayers, our schoolwork, or helping our community, we should strive to give our best by removing distractions. If our hearts are busy thinking about other things, we cannot give the task at hand the excellence it deserves. Yusha’s leadership style highlighted that quality and focus are essential for success. This discipline helps a person stay courageous and steady when things get difficult. By ensuring that his team was ready to commit their full attention, he showed that being prepared mentally and emotionally is just as important as being prepared physically.
Children can apply this lesson by learning to prioritize their responsibilities. When it is time to study, we focus on studying. When it is time to pray, we focus on Allah. By practicing this focus in small things, we build the strength of character needed for larger roles in the future. Yusha’s story encourages us to be mindful of our commitments and to recognize that achieving something great often requires us to set aside our personal distractions for a period of time. This level of dedication is a sign of a strong and disciplined heart that trusts in Allah and understands the weight of the work being done.

A New Generation Moves Forward
A major theme in the story of Yusha is the concept of continuity after the loss of a leader. After the life of Musa ended, the guidance provided by Allah did not stop; instead, it continued through Yusha. He was part of the generation that moved forward to enter the Holy Land after the years of wandering. This transition teaches us that while leaders and teachers may pass away or move on, the mission and the work of spreading good continue. One prophet or leader may begin a work that another person is destined to complete. This is a beautiful reminder that we are all part of a long chain of guidance and faithful service that spans across time.
This lesson is particularly comforting for children who may experience transitions, such as a favorite teacher leaving or a family moving to a new place. It shows that even when a person we look up to is no longer there, Allah’s plan continues and there will be new opportunities to learn and lead. The knowledge a teacher plants in a student is carried forward to the next generation. A parent who teaches a child how to worship is starting a chain of good deeds that the child will one day pass on to others. Success does not always mean finishing everything ourselves; sometimes, success means being a strong link in the chain and doing our part to carry the work forward.
Yusha’s transition from a student of Musa to the leader of his people is a story of faithful work continuing through generations. It reminds us that we should always do our best in whatever stage of life we are in. Whether we are the ones starting a project or the ones finishing it, our efforts are valuable in the sight of Allah. By remaining steadfast and continuing the mission of those before us, we contribute to a legacy of faith and courage. The story ends not with the end of an era, but with the continuation of a mission, showing that as long as there are people willing to listen, learn, and lead, the light of guidance will always be present.

🌟 Famous Stories
The Servant and the Fish 📖 Qur'anAl-Kahf 18:60-65 (Classical tafsir identifies the 'young man' as Yusha ibn Nun)
The Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, once went on a long journey with his faithful young companion, Yusha ibn Nun, peace be upon him. They were traveling to meet a very wise man named Al-Khidr. Allah had told Musa that the sign of their meeting place would be where their food, a salted fish they carried with them, would mysteriously disappear.
After walking for a long time, they stopped to rest by a large rock. While the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, was resting, something amazing happened. The dead, salted fish came back to life, wriggled out of their bag, and jumped into the sea, swimming away. Yusha, peace be upon him, saw this miracle but, when Musa woke up, he forgot to tell him about it. Shaytan (Satan) made him forget.
They continued on their journey until they were very tired and hungry. The Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, asked Yusha for their fish. It was only then that Yusha, peace be upon him, remembered the incredible event. He explained what he had seen. Musa, peace be upon him, knew this was the sign from Allah they had been waiting for. So, they carefully retraced their steps back to the rock where the fish had escaped to find Al-Khidr.
💡 Lesson: We should pay close attention to the signs from Allah and always be honest, even when we make a mistake.
❓ Quick questions
Question 1 / 3
Who was the young companion traveling with the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him?
The Day the Sun Stood Still 📜 Authentic hadithSahih al-Bukhari 3124, Sahih Muslim 1747
After the Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, passed away, Yusha ibn Nun, peace be upon him, was chosen by Allah to be the next prophet and leader for the Children of Israel. He was given the important task of leading his people into the blessed lands and conquering the city of Jericho. He was a courageous leader who put all of his trust in Allah.
As they fought to enter the city, the battle was very difficult and lasted the entire day. It was a Friday, and the sun was beginning to set. This was a problem, because the Sabbath (Saturday) was about to begin, and on the Sabbath, they were commanded not to fight. If the sun set, they would have to stop the battle and might be defeated.
Seeing the sun go down, the Prophet Yusha, peace be upon him, turned his face to the sky. He spoke to the sun, noting that it was following Allah's command, just as he was. Then he made a special prayer to Allah, asking Him to hold the sun back and stop it from setting. In a great miracle, Allah answered his prayer. He stopped the sun in the sky, giving Yusha, peace be upon him, and his army enough daylight to finish the battle and claim victory before the Sabbath began.
💡 Lesson: Allah has power over all things and can help His prophets and righteous followers in amazing ways.
