What Is a Prophet?

The Most Important Message

Imagine you are lost in a vast forest with many winding paths. You would want a guide who knows the way perfectly and can lead you safely to a beautiful home. Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave humanity to wander without help. He chose the best among men to be His messengers, bringing the light of truth to all people throughout history.

The core message of every single Prophet, from Adam to Muhammad ๏ทบ, was exactly the same: 'La ilaha illallah'โ€”there is no god but Allah. They came to teach us that only He deserves our worship, our prayers, and our total devotion. Because Allah is our Creator, He knows what is best for us, and He sent these guides to show us how to live in a way that pleases Him.

Why Are Prophets Human?

You might wonder why Allah didn't send angels to teach us instead. If an angel had come, we might have said, 'I cannot be like him; he is an angel and does not get tired or hungry.' But the Prophets were human beings who walked in the markets, ate food, and had families. They felt sadness, joy, and pain just like we do, but they were protected from committing sins.

By being human, they became the perfect examples for us to follow. We can see how Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was brave, how Yusuf (peace be upon him) was patient, and how Muhammad ๏ทบ was kind to everyone. Their lives show us that it is possible for a human being to be close to Allah and to choose what is right even when things are difficult.

๐Ÿค” Stop and Think

If the Prophets were not human like us, would it be harder or easier to follow their example? Why do you think so?

โ“ Why did Allah send humans as Prophets instead of angels?

The Choice of Allah

Being a Prophet was not a job someone could apply for or earn by working hard. It was a special gift and a heavy responsibility chosen by Allah alone. He selected those with the purest hearts and the strongest characters to carry His Word. When Allah chooses a Prophet, He grants him 'Ismah,' which means protection from error in delivering the message.

To help people recognize them, Allah often gave the Prophets miracles. These miracles were not magic; they only happened by Allah's permission to prove that the person was truly a messenger. For example, the sea parting for Musa (peace be upon him) or the healing of the sick by 'Isa (peace be upon him) were signs that their message was from the Lord of the worlds.

Why We Obey Them

Obeying the Prophet is actually part of obeying Allah. The Qurโ€™an tells us that whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah. This is because the Prophets did not speak from their own desires; they only shared what Allah revealed to them. Their lives provide the 'Sunnah'โ€”the practical way to apply the teachings of the Qurโ€™an in our daily routines.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

The exact number of prophets is not mentioned in the Qur'an, but a famous Hadith mentions there were 124,000, with 313 of them being Messengers (Rasul). Scholars note that the chain of this specific Hadith has some debate regarding its strength.

When we follow the guidance of the Prophets, we are following a map that leads to Jannah. They taught us how to pray, how to be honest in business, and how to treat our parents with love. Without their guidance, we would be confused about how to properly express our love for our Creator.

Worship is for Allah Alone

Even though we love and respect the Prophets more than anyone else, we must remember a very important rule: we never worship them. A Prophet is a servant and a messenger of Allah, not a god. We do not pray to them or ask them for things that only Allah can provide. This is what makes Islam unique and clear.

โ“ Who are we actually obeying when we follow a Prophet?

Prophets are like the highest mountain peaks that catch the first light of the sun. They reflect the light, but they are not the sun itself. We thank Allah for sending them, we send blessings upon them, and we try our best to follow their footsteps, always remembering that our ultimate goal is to reach the pleasure of Allah alone.

๐Ÿ”Ž Source Check

The concept of Tawhid and the human nature of Prophets are from the Qur'an. The specific attributes of Prophets (honesty, conveying the message) are part of established Islamic creed ('Aqidah). The count of prophets is from Hadith literature (Musnad Ahmad).
