🧭 Learning Adventure — not a prophet chapter
Chapter 32 · ✨
Miracle or Magic?
Understanding the Signs of Allah

The Marketplace Challenge
In the dusty streets of ancient Baghdad, a crowd gathered around a man who claimed to make a golden coin disappear. He wore colorful robes and moved his hands so quickly that the children gasped in wonder. Little Omar watched closely, wondering if this was like the miracles he heard about in the stories of the Prophets. His grandfather, a wise teacher, smiled and pulled him aside to explain a very important difference.
The man in the market was using 'sihr' or sleight of hand—tricks designed to fool the eyes. In the Qur'an, Allah tells us about the magicians in the time of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) who used ropes and sticks to make people think they saw snakes. It was an illusion, a trick of the light and movement. These tricks are limited and follow the laws of the world that Allah created, unlike a true miracle.
❓ What were the magicians' ropes actually doing?
What is a Mu'jizah?
A true miracle is called a 'Mu'jizah.' This word comes from a root meaning 'to make someone unable'—it is something so amazing that no human, no matter how clever, could ever copy it. A miracle is not a trick; it is a direct act from Allah that breaks the normal rules of nature. Fire is usually hot and burns, but by Allah's permission, it became cool for Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
Miracles were given to Prophets to prove they were telling the truth. Think of it like a special stamp of approval from the Creator. While a magician needs tools, mirrors, or hidden strings, a Prophet only needs the permission of Allah. These events don't happen because of luck or coincidence; they are purposeful signs meant to guide people back to the straight path.
🤔 Stop and Think
If a scientist creates a medicine that saves lives, is that a miracle or a result of using Allah's laws of nature?
❓ What does the word 'Mu'jizah' imply?
Technology and Wonder
Sometimes we see things today that look like magic but are actually science and technology. If you showed a smartphone to someone living a thousand years ago, they might think it was a miracle! They would see a glowing glass box that lets you talk to people across the ocean. However, technology is just humans using the materials and laws of physics that Allah placed in the universe.
The difference is that anyone can learn science if they study hard enough. If you learn how a screen works, the 'magic' disappears and becomes knowledge. But no amount of studying can teach a person how to split the moon or bring a dead bird back to life. Those belong only to the power of the Almighty, and they are beyond the reach of human inventions.
❓ Can anyone learn to perform a miracle?

The Illusion of the Eyes
Magic and illusions often rely on distraction. The magician wants you to look at his left hand while his right hand hides the coin. In Islamic history, scholars warned that seeking help from jinn or using dark magic is strictly forbidden. It is a way of trying to find shortcuts or power that doesn't belong to us. It creates confusion, while the signs of Allah create clarity and peace.
💡 Did You Know?
The magicians of Pharaoh were the first to believe in Musa (peace be upon him) because they were experts in illusions and knew his miracle was real power, not a trick.
When Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) threw his staff and it turned into a real snake, the magicians—who were experts at tricks—immediately knew it wasn't an illusion. They realized that their ropes were just ropes, but Musa's (peace be upon him) staff had truly changed by the power of the Creator. They fell into prostration because they recognized the truth from the fake.
The Greatest Miracle Remaining
Most miracles happened at a specific time for a specific group of people to see. We weren't there to see the sea part or the camel come out of the rock. However, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was given a miracle that we can still hold in our hands today: The Noble Qur'an. Its beauty, its facts about the world, and the way it touches hearts are signs that never fade.
❓ Why did the magicians prostrate?
So, the next time you see something amazing—whether it is a clever trick, a new robot, or a beautiful sunset—remember to say 'SubhanAllah.' We recognize that while humans can be very clever with the tools they are given, only Allah is the Creator of all causes and effects. A miracle is a window into His infinite power, showing us that He is over all things capable.
🔎 Source Check
Descriptions of the magicians' illusions are from the Qur'an. The definition of Mu'jizah is from classical Islamic Aqeedah (theology). Historical context of Baghdad is general history.
