The Farewell Pilgrimage

The Great Message of Arafat

The Valley of Tents
🎬 The Valley of Tents

The Journey of a Lifetime

In the tenth year after the Hijrah, the city of Madinah hummed with excitement. Word had spread that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was going to perform Hajj. Thousands of people arrived from every direction, setting up tents that stretched across the horizon. As they traveled toward Makkah, the air was filled with a beautiful chant called the Talbiyah, a humble declaration that they were responding to Allah’s call alone.

This pilgrimage was special because it was the only Hajj the Prophet ﷺ performed after the migration to Madinah. The atmosphere was warm and peaceful. Every person, whether rich or poor, wore simple white clothes. This showed that in the eyes of Allah, everyone is equal. They were not just traveling to a city; they were embarking on a spiritual journey to the house built by Ibrahim peace be upon him.

❓ What is the simple white clothing worn by pilgrims called?

Standing on the Plain of Arafat

The most important moment happened at a place called Arafat. Under the warm sun, a massive crowd of over 100,000 believers gathered. The Prophet ﷺ sat upon his camel, al-Qaswa, and delivered a speech that would change history. This is known as the Farewell Sermon. He spoke with great love and clarity, making sure those who were present would carry his words to those who were not.

He reminded everyone that their lives, their property, and their honor were sacred. Just as the month of Dhul-Hijjah is sacred, so is the dignity of every human being. He taught that no person is better than another because of their race or where they come from. The only thing that makes a person truly great is their Taqwa, which means their mindfulness and love for Allah.

🤔 Stop and Think

If all humans are equal in the sight of Allah, how should that change the way we treat people who are different from us?

❓ Which mountain/plain is the most important site for Hajj prayers?

Rights and Responsibilities

During this historic gathering, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized the rights of women, telling the men to treat them with kindness and respect. He also spoke about ending unfair practices, like charging high interest on debts, which hurt the poor. His message was a blueprint for a fair and just society where everyone looks out for one another as brothers and sisters in faith.

He asked the people, 'Have I delivered the message?' The massive crowd responded with a thunderous 'Yes!' The Prophet ﷺ then looked toward the sky and asked Allah to be a witness to their testimony. It was a moment of deep emotion, as the companions realized that the religion of Islam was now complete and perfectly explained.

The Two Weighty Things

As he concluded his teachings, the Prophet ﷺ gave the Muslims a special gift to keep them safe from going astray. He told them that he was leaving behind two things: the Book of Allah (the Qur'an) and his Sunnah (his example and teachings). He promised that as long as people held firmly to these two guides, they would never lose their way.

💡 Did You Know?

The Prophet's ﷺ camel was named al-Qaswa, and she carried him during many of the most important moments of his life, including this final Hajj.

This guidance was not just for the people standing there that day; it was for us, too. Even though hundreds of years have passed, the Qur'an and Sunnah remain our light. They teach us how to be honest, how to pray, and how to treat our neighbors with the same kindness that the Prophet ﷺ showed to the world.

❓ What two things did the Prophet ﷺ leave for our guidance?

Completion of the Faith

While the Prophet ﷺ was at Arafat, a final and powerful verse of the Qur'an was revealed. Allah declared that He had perfected the religion for the believers and completed His favor upon them. This brought tears to the eyes of many companions, as they understood that their mission to spread peace and truth was now firmly established.

The Farewell Pilgrimage teaches us that Islam is a religion of unity. When we see the millions of people performing Hajj today, they are following the exact same steps the Prophet ﷺ took. They remind the world that regardless of our colors or languages, we are one family under the guidance of Allah, striving for a life of goodness.

❓ What makes a person better than another in Islam?

🔎 Source Check

The details of the sermon and the Hajj rituals come from authentic Hadith (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) and the Seerah. The revelation of the final verse is recorded in the Qur'an. The exact number of pilgrims is debated but generally estimated between 100,000 and 124,000.
