Chapter 48 · 🕌
Building Madinah
A New Home for the Believers

Laying the Foundations
The city of Madinah was buzzing with a special kind of energy. The Sahaba (companions) had just arrived from Makkah, and their first big project was building the Prophet’s Mosque, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Everyone helped, carrying heavy mud bricks and palm trunks. Even the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ worked alongside them, showing that in Islam, everyone is equal in their service to Allah.
❓ What were the main materials used to build the first mosque in Madinah?
The ground where the mosque was built originally belonged to two young orphans named Sahl and Suhayl. Although they offered it as a gift, the Prophet ﷺ insisted on paying them fairly for the land. This taught the community that honesty and fairness are the roots of a strong society. The building was simple: walls of clay, pillars of palm trees, and a roof of palm leaves.
The Bond of Brotherhood
Imagine arriving in a new city with nothing but the clothes on your back. This was the situation for the Muhajirun (the migrants). To help them, the Prophet ﷺ established the 'Mu’akhah' or brotherhood. He paired one Muhajir from Makkah with one Ansar (helper) from Madinah. The Ansar were so generous that they offered to share their homes, dates, and businesses with their new brothers.
This wasn't just about sharing food; it was about building a family based on faith rather than bloodlines. The Ansar showed incredible 'Ithar' (selflessness), which is mentioned in the Qur'an as a beautiful quality. They didn't feel jealous or burdened; they felt honored to help, turning Madinah into a city where no one was left to struggle alone.
🤔 Stop and Think
If you moved to a new city today, how would you feel if someone offered to share half of everything they owned with you? How would you thank them?
❓ What does 'Ithar' mean?
A Fair Market for All
Before the Muslims arrived, the markets in Madinah often had unfair rules or high interest. The Prophet ﷺ helped establish a new market where trading was honest. He taught that a merchant who is truthful and trustworthy will be with the prophets on the Day of Judgment. This new system encouraged people to work hard and earn a 'Halal' (permissible) living.
Charity, or Sadaqah, became the heartbeat of the city. A special platform called 'As-Suffah' was built in the mosque for those who were poor or had no family. The community made sure these students of knowledge were fed every single day. In Madinah, having wealth was seen as a responsibility to help those who had less.
❓ Who were the 'As-Suffah'?

The Constitution of Madinah
Madinah wasn't just home to Muslims; there were Jewish tribes and others living there too. To ensure peace, the Prophet ﷺ drafted the 'Constitution of Madinah.' This was one of the first written agreements in history that protected the rights of different groups. It stated that all citizens, regardless of their tribe, would defend the city together if it was attacked.
💡 Did You Know?
The roof of the first mosque was made of palm leaves. When it rained, the floor—which was just sand and pebbles—would get muddy, and the Sahaba would sometimes pray with mud on their foreheads!
The agreement emphasized justice and forbade helping criminals. It showed that Islam promotes living peacefully with neighbors and respecting their rights. As long as everyone followed the rules of the pact, they were safe and free to practice their own faith. This turned a divided city into a unified community under the rule of law.
❓ What was the purpose of the Constitution of Madinah?
A Center of Learning
The Mosque was more than just a place to pray five times a day. it was a school, a meeting hall, and a place where news was shared. Men, women, and children all came to learn the Qur'an as it was being revealed. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged everyone to seek knowledge, saying that the path to knowledge leads to Paradise.
Every day, the community grew stronger in their character. They learned to be kind to animals, to keep the streets clean, and to speak softly. Madinah became a 'light' for the rest of the world, showing how a society can thrive when people put Allah first and treat each other with mercy and respect.
🔎 Source Check
The mosque construction and brotherhood (Mu’akhah) are recorded in authentic Hadith (Bukhari/Muslim). The Constitution of Madinah is a well-known historical document found in the Seerah of Ibn Hisham. The specific dialogue during the land purchase is from Seerah records.
