Zamzam and Hajar’s Courage

A Spring in the Desert: The Courage of Hajar

Trust in the Valley

In the middle of a dry, rocky valley where no grass grew and no people lived, a righteous woman named Hajar stood with her young baby, Ismail. Ibrahim peace be upon him had brought them to this specific spot by the command of Allah. As he prepared to leave, Hajar asked him if Allah had commanded this. When he confirmed it was so, she showed incredible courage and faith, saying that Allah would not let them be lost.

They were left with only a small bag of dates and a leather water-skin. The sun grew hot, and soon the water was gone. Little Ismail began to cry from thirst. Hajar did not give up or lose hope in Allah’s mercy. She began to search for any sign of life or water in the vast, quiet wilderness of Makkah.

❓ What did Hajar say when she learned Allah ordered them to stay there?

Between Safa and Marwah

Hajar ran to the top of the nearest hill, As-Safa, looking out across the horizon for a caravan or a well, but she saw nothing. She then climbed down and ran across the valley floor, tucking up her robe so she could move faster. She reached the hill of Al-Marwah and stood there, searching again. She did not find anyone, so she ran back to Safa.

She traveled between these two hills seven times in total. This act of devotion and effort was so beloved to Allah that it became a ritual for every pilgrim who visits Makkah today. Despite her exhaustion and the heat, she kept her heart connected to her Creator, trusting that a way out would be provided for her and her son.

🤔 Stop and Think

Hajar ran seven times before the water appeared. Why do you think Allah wanted her to try so many times instead of giving the water right away?

❓ How many times did Hajar walk between the two hills?

The Miracle of Zamzam

While she was at Al-Marwah, she heard a voice. She called out, asking the voice to help if it had anything good to offer. Suddenly, she saw an angel (Jibril) at the place where the Kaaba would later be built. The angel dug into the earth with his heel—or his wing, as some accounts say—and water began to gush out from the dry ground!

Hajar was amazed and quickly began to build a small dam of earth around the water to keep it from flowing away. She scooped the water into her leather bag. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ later mentioned that if she had let the water flow naturally, Zamzam would have been a flowing stream above the ground today.

❓ Who struck the ground to make the water appear?

Life Returns to the Valley

The angel told Hajar not to fear being lost, for this was the House of Allah that the boy and his father would one day build, and Allah never neglects His people. Hajar drank the cool, blessed water and nursed her son. The water of Zamzam was not just a drink; it was also a food that made them feel full and strong.

💡 Did You Know?

The name 'Zamzam' comes from the phrase 'Zome Zome,' which Hajar said meaning 'Stop, stop' or 'Flow together' as she tried to contain the water.

Soon, birds began to circle over the water. A tribe called the Jurhum was passing nearby and noticed the birds, which meant water was near. They found Hajar and asked permission to settle there. Hajar agreed, but she kept the rights to the well. The empty valley slowly transformed into a bustling place of life and community.

❓ Which tribe settled in Makkah after finding the water?

A Legacy for Everyone

Hajar is remembered as a woman of immense strength and 'Tawakkul' (trust in Allah). She was not a prophet, but she was a very righteous believer whose actions changed history. Because of her patience, the well of Zamzam still flows today, thousands of years later, providing water to millions of people who visit the city of Makkah.

Every time we see a picture of the hills of Safa and Marwah, we should remember that Allah rewards those who work hard and trust Him. Hajar did her best by running seven times, and Allah provided the miracle. This teaches us that we must do our part, and then leave the results to the Most Merciful.

🔎 Source Check

The story of Hajar, the seven rounds, and the angel digging the well is recorded in the Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 3364). The location and the dry valley are mentioned in the Qur'an. The exact spot of the angel's strike (heel vs wing) has slight variations in narrations.
