The Queen of Sheba
A Queen’s Journey to the Light

A Kingdom of Splendor
In the lush land of Sheba, in what is now modern-day Yemen, lived a powerful Queen. Her kingdom was famous for its grand architecture and vast wealth, fueled by the trade of precious spices and incense. However, despite their intelligence and worldly success, the Queen and her people bowed down to the sun instead of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
One day, a message arrived from Prophet Sulayman ﷺ, the king of the north. Unlike the letters she was used to, this one began: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' It was an invitation to surrender to the One True God. The Queen, wise and cautious, decided to send magnificent gifts to test Sulayman ﷺ, curious to see if he was merely a worldly king seeking gold or a true messenger of Allah.
❓ What did Sulayman ﷺ start his letter with?
The Miraculous Invitation
When her envoys reached the court of Sulayman ﷺ, they were stunned. The Prophet ﷺ did not care for their gold; Allah had already given him kingdoms and abilities beyond human imagination, including the power to speak to animals and command the wind. He sent the envoys back with a warning: he did not want their wealth, but rather for them to recognize the truth of Islam.
The Queen realized that she was not dealing with an ordinary ruler. She decided to travel to Jerusalem herself to meet this man. Before she even arrived, Sulayman ﷺ asked his council who could bring her magnificent throne to him. Through the knowledge of the Scripture, the throne was transported in the blink of an eye, a miracle permitted by Allah to show His supreme power.
🤔 Stop and Think
Why do you think the Queen decided to travel to meet Sulayman ﷺ instead of just sending more gifts?
❓ How fast was the throne brought to Sulayman ﷺ?
The Palace of Glass
When the Queen arrived, she was shown her own throne, which had been slightly altered. She recognized it, realizing that Sulayman ﷺ possessed powers that could only come from the Divine. Then, she was invited to enter the palace. As she stepped forward, she thought she saw a deep pool of water and tucked up her skirts to keep them dry.
Sulayman ﷺ gently informed her that it was not water, but a floor made of smooth, clear glass over a stream. At that moment, the Queen’s heart opened. She realized that just as she had been mistaken about the glass, she had been mistaken about the sun. The sun was just a creation, but the One who created the light was the only One worthy of worship.
❓ What did the Queen think the glass floor was?

Submission to the Lord of Worlds
The Queen of Sheba did not let her pride as a ruler stop her from accepting the truth. She stood in the magnificent court and made a beautiful declaration. She admitted that she had wronged her own soul by worshipping other than Allah, and she submitted herself alongside Sulayman ﷺ to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
💡 Did You Know?
The Queen's kingdom was famous for the Marib Dam, a wonder of ancient engineering that helped turn the desert into a green garden.
Her story is a powerful reminder that true wisdom is not found in how much gold we have or how large our houses are. True wisdom is the ability to recognize the signs of Allah in the world around us and having the courage to change our path when we find the truth.
❓ Who did the Queen submit to at the end?
Legacy of Sheba
History tells us that Sheba remained a legendary civilization for centuries. The ruins of great dams and temples still stand today in Yemen, reminding us of the people who once lived there. While many legends exist about the Queen's personal name or her life after this meeting, the Qur'an focuses on the most important part: her journey from darkness to light.
Through her encounter with Sulayman ﷺ, a whole kingdom was shown the way to tawhid (the Oneness of God). She went from being a powerful ruler of people to a humble servant of Allah, proving that the greatest kingdom one can earn is a place in Paradise through faith.
🔎 Source Check
The message from Sulayman ﷺ, the transport of the throne, and the glass palace are from the Qur'an. The location in Yemen is supported by historical geography. Details about her specific name (often cited as Bilqis) are from historical reports (Isra'iliyyat) and are not mentioned in the Qur'an or Sahih Hadith.
