🧭 Learning Adventure — not a prophet chapter
Chapter 44 · 📖
Hira and the First Revelation
The Silent Cave and the First Word

The Search for Truth
High above the bustling city of Makkah stands Jabal al-Nur, the 'Mountain of Light.' For many months, Muhammad ﷺ would leave the busy streets to seek solitude here. He climbed the steep, rocky paths to a small cave called Hira. The climb was difficult, requiring strength and patience, but the reward was a quiet place to think about the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
❓ What does 'Jabal al-Nur' mean in English?
Inside Cave Hira, the air was cool, and the only sounds were the wind and the distant rustle of desert plants. Muhammad ﷺ would spend many nights here, bringing simple food like dates and water. He looked at the stars and the vast desert, wondering about the purpose of life and why people had turned away from the message of the earlier prophets. This period of quiet reflection is called Tahannuth.
The Night of Power
During one special night in the month of Ramadan, everything changed. While he was alone in the cave, an angel appeared. It was Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon him. The angel commanded him to 'Read!' or 'Recite!' Muhammad ﷺ replied that he could not read. The angel embraced him tightly and repeated the command. This happened three times, showing the great importance of what was about to be revealed.
❓ Which angel brought the revelation to the cave?
By Allah's permission, the first five verses of the Qur'an were spoken. These words were not written on paper but were written directly onto the heart of Muhammad ﷺ. This event, known as the First Revelation, marked the beginning of his journey as the final messenger of Allah to all of mankind.
🤔 Stop and Think
Why do you think Allah chose the word 'Read' to be the very first word of the Qur'an instead of 'Pray' or 'Fast'?
The First Five Verses
The verses told of Allah as the Creator who created man from a clinging substance. They spoke of the 'Generous Lord' who taught man by the use of the pen. Even though the mountain was made of hard granite and basalt, the words of the Qur'an were even more solid and powerful. This moment transformed a quiet cave into the starting point of a message that would reach every corner of the world.
The word 'Iqra' (Read) was the very first word. This tells us that learning, seeking knowledge, and observing the world around us are the most important things a believer can do. Allah wants us to use our minds to understand His signs in nature, from the smallest ant to the highest mountain peak.
❓ What was the very first word revealed to the Prophet ﷺ?

The Environment of the Revelation
Jabal al-Nur is a jagged mountain with a height of about 642 meters. The cave itself is small, enough for one person to sit or lie down comfortably. It faces the direction of the Kaaba, though back then, the view was much clearer without the modern buildings we see today. The rocks are dark and sharp, reminding visitors of the rugged strength needed to stand for the truth.
💡 Did You Know?
The cave of Hira is so small that only about five or six people can fit inside it at once today, and it is located near the very top of the mountain.
Scientists and historians note that the climate in the Hijaz region is arid and hot. However, the elevation of the cave provided a natural escape from the intense heat of the valley below. This natural setting was the perfect 'classroom' for the first lesson of Islam—to read in the name of your Lord.
A Turning Point for the World
When Muhammad ﷺ left the cave that night, the world was no longer the same. He was shaken by the weight of the revelation, but he had the support of his wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). The revelation didn't just change one man; it began a revolution of knowledge, justice, and kindness that lasted for centuries and continues today.
❓ Who was the first person to comfort the Prophet ﷺ after he left the cave?
Every time we open the Qur'an today, we are connecting back to that quiet, rocky cave on the Mountain of Light. We are reminded that even in the quietest places, Allah’s guidance can find us. We learn that seeking knowledge is an act of worship, just as it was when the first word 'Iqra' echoed through the mountains.
🔎 Source Check
The occurrence of the revelation in the cave of Hira is recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. The description of the mountain is based on geographical history. The exact date of the night is not specified in the Qur'an but is known to be in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
