A Prayer for a Child
🎬 A Prayer for a Child

Zakariya was a prophet and devoted servant of Allah. He was also connected to the care of Maryam. The Qur’an describes him entering her prayer space and finding provision with her. When he asked where it came from, she answered that it was from Allah, who provides without measure.

❓ Who provided Maryam with her sustenance?

That scene awakened hope in Zakariya. He was elderly, and his wife had not been able to have children. Yet he made a private, humble dua asking Allah for a righteous heir who would carry forward the work of faith.

Zakariya did not speak as if his age limited Allah. He spoke about his own weakness and Allah’s generosity.

Allah answered with the glad tidings of a son named Yahya—a name the Qur’an says had not been given before in that way. Zakariya was astonished and asked for a sign.

❓ What was the name of the son promised to Zakariya?

His sign was that he would not speak to people for a number of days despite being physically sound, except through gestures, while continuing to remember Allah. He came out to his people and signaled to them to glorify Allah morning and evening.

❓ How did Zakariya communicate with his people during his sign?

The miracle spotlight is the birth of Yahya to elderly parents and the temporary sign involving Zakariya’s speech.

Picture prompts can show an ancient prayer sanctuary with baskets of unexpected provision; an oil lamp glowing during a private nighttime dua; a parchment with the name “Yahya” added as UI text rather than inside generated art; and a peaceful community gathering where communication happens through gestures without showing Zakariya himself.

A “quiet communication” game fits the chapter: children must communicate a simple message using only gestures for sixty seconds. Then they discuss how much we rely on speech and how every ability is a blessing.

Zakariya’s story is also about private prayer. Not every dua must be loud or public. Some of the most sincere prayers are whispered when no one else is listening.

❓ Where did Zakariya make his sincere prayer?

Another lesson is that a righteous goal can be bigger than personal happiness. Zakariya wanted a child, but he also cared about the continuation of worship and guidance after him.

Children can make a “dua seed” card. On one side they write something good they hope for. On the other, they write what effort they can make while waiting. This teaches that prayer and action can grow together.

The Qur’an does not require us to invent extra drama around Zakariya’s life. His chapter is powerful because of its quietness: an old prophet sees Allah’s provision, raises his hands in hope, and receives news that human calculation would have considered impossible.

The final message is: **Never think you are too small, too late, or too unlikely for Allah to hear your sincere dua.**

Deeper Reading: Hope With Good Manners

Zakariya’s dua is a model of how believers can ask Allah for something deeply desired. He did not make demands. He described his weakness, remembered Allah’s generosity, and asked privately.

Children can learn that dua is not a vending machine. We ask with hope, but Allah knows what is best and when it is best. An answered dua may come exactly as requested, later than expected, in another form, or be rewarded in a way the person does not yet see.

❓ Is dua compared to a vending machine?

Zakariya also reminds families not to mock older people’s hopes or younger people’s prayers. Human expectations are limited, while Allah’s power is not.

A quiet app activity can let the child type or record a private dua that stays only on the device and can be deleted immediately. For privacy, the app should never upload a child’s personal dua by default.

✨ Miracle Spotlight

Allah granted Yahya to Zakariya and his wife in old age and gave Zakariya the temporary sign involving his speech.

🌙 Pause & Imagine

Close your eyes for ten seconds and imagine the environment from this story without imagining the prophet’s appearance. What do you hear: wind, animals, water, tools, footsteps, or a busy marketplace? What colors would the sky, stone, sand, wood, or plants have looked like? The goal is to enter the setting while keeping the prophet respectfully unseen.

💡 Did You Know?

Prophetic stories in the Qur’an are not arranged as one ordinary history textbook. The same prophet may appear in several surahs, with each passage highlighting a different lesson. That is why good storytelling should connect verses carefully instead of pretending every detail appears in one place.

The Heavenly Food for Maryam 📖 Qur'an

    Al 'Imran 3:37

Prophet Zakariya, peace be upon him, was the guardian of Maryam, the mother of Prophet Isa. Maryam was a very devout young woman who spent her time worshipping Allah in a special prayer chamber, or mihrab. As her guardian, Zakariya, peace be upon him, would visit her to bring her food and make sure she was well. He was the only person who entered her chamber.

One day, when he went to see her, he was amazed. He found fresh, delicious fruits with her that were completely out of season. It was like finding ripe summer grapes in the middle of a cold winter. Prophet Zakariya, peace be upon him, knew he had not brought these fruits, so he asked her, “O Maryam, from where is this for you?”

With perfect faith, Maryam replied, “It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.” Seeing this clear miracle from Allah with his own eyes filled Zakariya's heart with hope. It made him think that if Allah could provide fruit out of season, then surely He could also grant him, a very old man, a righteous child of his own.

💡 Lesson: Allah provides for His righteous servants in ways we cannot imagine.

    ❓ Quick questions

    Question 1 / 3

Who was Prophet Zakariya the guardian of?

The Sign of Silence 📖 Qur'an

    Maryam 19:10-11, Al 'Imran 3:41

When the angels gave Prophet Zakariya, peace be upon him, the good news that Allah would grant him a son named Yahya, he was overjoyed but also amazed. He and his wife were very old, and he wanted his heart to be completely certain of this great miracle. So he asked Allah, “My Lord, make for me a sign.”

Allah responded that his sign would be something very unique. For three days and nights, Prophet Zakariya, peace be upon him, would lose his ability to speak to other people, even though he would be perfectly healthy. He would only be able to communicate using gestures and signs. This was a personal and powerful sign directly from Allah to His prophet.

Even though he could not speak to people, he was commanded to remember and glorify Allah very much during this time. So, for three days, his tongue was reserved only for the praise of Allah. He came out of his prayer chamber and signaled to his people that they too should glorify Allah in the mornings and evenings. This quiet miracle confirmed the promise of Yahya and showed the incredible power of Allah.

💡 Lesson: Signs from Allah can come in unexpected ways, and we should always be in a state of remembering Him.
