Courage, Revelation, and Freedom from Pharaoh
🎬 Courage, Revelation, and Freedom from Pharaoh

Musa’s story is the most frequently mentioned prophetic story in the Qur’an. It begins under a cruel ruler, moves through a palace and desert, includes a burning bush, a confrontation with magicians, the splitting of the sea, revelation at Mount Sinai, years of leadership, and many lessons about courage.

Pharaoh had become a tyrant in Egypt and oppressed the Children of Israel. He ordered the killing of their newborn sons. Allah inspired Musa’s mother to nurse her baby and, when she feared for him, place him in a chest and set it on the river. The chest reached Pharaoh’s household. Musa’s sister watched from a distance, and through Allah’s plan Musa was eventually returned to his mother for nursing.

❓ Where did Musa's mother place him for safety?

Musa grew up and later left Egypt after accidentally causing the death of a man during a fight. He sought forgiveness and traveled to Madyan. There he helped women water their animals and later stayed for years.

On his return journey, Musa saw a fire near Mount Tur. There Allah called him and gave him his mission. His staff became a serpent by Allah’s permission, and his hand shone brightly as another sign. Musa asked that his brother Harun be sent with him because Harun was more fluent in speech.

❓ Who did Musa ask to help him because of his speech?

Musa and Harun went to Pharaoh and called him to worship Allah and release the Children of Israel. Pharaoh demanded signs. In a public confrontation, his magicians threw ropes and staffs that appeared to move through illusion. Musa threw his staff, and by Allah’s permission it swallowed what they had faked. The magicians immediately recognized that this was not ordinary magic and fell in prostration to Allah despite Pharaoh’s threats.

❓ What happened to the magicians after seeing the miracle?

More signs followed in Egypt, but Pharaoh remained arrogant. Finally Musa was commanded to lead the Children of Israel out. Pharaoh’s army pursued them until the believers reached the sea. With water ahead and an army behind, people panicked. Musa answered with confidence that his Lord was with him and would guide him.

Allah commanded Musa to strike the sea with his staff. The sea split into pathways, and the believers crossed. Pharaoh followed and was drowned when the waters returned. This is one of the most dramatic miracles in the Qur’an.

❓ How did the sea split open?

After rescue, Musa received revelation and the Tablets. During his absence, some of his people were led into worshiping a calf. Musa returned angry and grieved. Harun explained that he had tried to stop the wrongdoing but feared dividing the community further.

Musa’s years of leadership contained many tests. His people complained about food and water. Allah provided manna and quails and brought water from a rock when Musa struck it with his staff by Allah’s command. The Qur’an also records Musa’s journey with a mysterious servant of Allah traditionally known as al-Khidr, where Musa learned that events can contain wisdom hidden from immediate human understanding.

❓ What food did Allah provide in the desert?

Musa’s miracle spotlight is large: the staff becoming a serpent, the shining hand, the sea splitting, water coming from the rock, and other signs given against Pharaoh. Each occurred by Allah’s permission.

Illustrations can be spectacular while respecting the no-prophet rule: a reed basket floating on the Nile; a distant palace; a desert well in Madyan; a glowing bush on a dark mountain; a staff lying on the ground beside a serpent-like trail with no person visible; rows of magician ropes; the sea standing like walls with a dry path through it; Mount Sinai beneath stars; and twelve springs emerging from rock.

Children can build a timeline strip because Musa’s story has many stages. Another activity can ask them to distinguish “magic” from “miracle.” Magic is something people try to perform through techniques, deception, or forbidden means. A prophetic miracle is an extraordinary sign created by Allah to support a messenger.

Musa also teaches children that brave people can still feel fear. He left Egypt afraid, worried about speaking, and asked Allah for help. Courage is not never feeling afraid. Courage is obeying Allah while seeking help and moving forward.

His story ends as one of the Qur’an’s greatest lessons in leadership: power belongs to Allah, tyrants do not last forever, and guidance requires patience long after the dramatic rescue is over.

The staff, shining hand, splitting of the sea, and water from the rock are among the major signs Allah gave Musa.

🌙 Pause & Imagine

Close your eyes for ten seconds and imagine the environment from this story without imagining the prophet’s appearance. What do you hear: wind, animals, water, tools, footsteps, or a busy marketplace? What colors would the sky, stone, sand, wood, or plants have looked like? The goal is to enter the setting while keeping the prophet respectfully unseen.

💡 Did You Know?

Prophetic stories in the Qur’an are not arranged as one ordinary history textbook. The same prophet may appear in several surahs, with each passage highlighting a different lesson. That is why good storytelling should connect verses carefully instead of pretending every detail appears in one place.

    🌟 Famous Stories

The Journey for Knowledge 📖 Qur'an

    Al-Kahf 18:60-82

Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, was a great messenger of Allah. One day, he was asked if there was anyone on Earth more knowledgeable than him, and he thought there was not. Allah then revealed to him that there was a special servant of His, often identified as al-Khidr, who had knowledge that Musa did not have. So, Musa, peace be upon him, set out on a long journey to find this wise man and learn from him.

When he finally found al-Khidr, Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, politely asked if he could follow him to learn from his special wisdom. Al-Khidr agreed, but on one condition: Musa must have complete patience and not ask about anything he did until al-Khidr himself chose to explain it. Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, promised he would be patient and they began their journey together, a prophet seeking knowledge from another of Allah's servants.

During their travels, al-Khidr did three very confusing things. He damaged a boat belonging to poor people, he harmed a young boy, and he fixed a wall for free in a town where the people were unkind to them. Each time, Musa, peace be upon him, forgot his promise and questioned him. Finally, al-Khidr explained that everything he did was a secret command from Allah. He saved the boat from a tyrant king, the boy was going to grow up to harm his believing parents, and under the wall was a treasure for two orphans.

💡 Lesson: True knowledge comes from Allah, and we must be patient even when we do not understand His divine plan.

    ❓ Quick questions

    Question 1 / 3

What was the one rule the wise man gave to Musa (peace be upon him)?

The Angel of Death 📜 Authentic hadith

    Sahih al-Bukhari 3407

Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, was known for his strength and mighty character. A famous story from a hadith tells us about a time when the Angel of Death came to him in the form of a man. The angel told Musa, peace be upon him, that it was his time to die and that he had come to take his soul. The hadith mentions that Musa, peace be upon him, reacted by striking the angel.

The Angel of Death returned to Allah and said, “You sent me to a servant who does not want to die.” Allah, who knows all things, told the angel to go back. The angel was to offer Musa, peace be upon him, a special choice. He was to tell the prophet to place his hand on the back of an ox. For every single hair that his hand covered, Musa, peace be upon him, would be granted one more year of life.

The angel returned and gave him this message from Allah. Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, thought about this amazing offer. He then asked the angel a very important question: “What will happen after all those years are over?” The angel replied, “Then death.” Hearing this, Musa, peace be upon him, understood that death comes to everyone. He said that in that case, the time was right, and he accepted Allah's will, asking only to pass away near the holy land.

💡 Lesson: Even the greatest prophets must face death, and the best choice is always to accept Allah's will.
