A Name Linked With Patience and Righteousness
🎬 A Name Linked With Patience and Righteousness

Dhul-Kifl is one of the prophets named in the Qur’an, but revelation gives very few details about his life. He appears in Surah Al-Anbiya alongside Ismail and Idris among those who were patient, and the Qur’an says Allah admitted them into His mercy because they were righteous. In Surah Sad, Dhul-Kifl is mentioned among the excellent.

❓ In which Surah is Dhul-Kifl mentioned alongside Ismail and Idris?

That is the secure foundation of the chapter.

Because the Qur’an gives so little detail, later storytellers have offered different ideas about who Dhul-Kifl was, what position he held, and what exact events happened during his life. Those reports are not strong enough to turn into a confident children’s biography. A good Islamic book should teach children that saying “we do not know” is a form of honesty.

So how can a chapter about Dhul-Kifl still be exciting? By turning it into a “research detective” chapter.

Start with three fact cards: 1. Dhul-Kifl is named in the Qur’an. 2. He is associated with patience. 3. He is counted among the righteous and excellent.

❓ Which specific virtue is Dhul-Kifl associated with in the Qur’an?

clay lamp burning steadily through the night beside a closed scroll.
🎬 clay lamp burning steadily through the night beside a closed scroll.

Then create a second pile labeled “Not clearly established.” This pile might include claims about his exact city, family, job, and personal miracles. Children drag those cards into the correct category.

This is more than a game. It teaches a skill they will need their whole lives: not everything repeated online, in videos, or even in old books is equally reliable.

The miracle spotlight should be handled carefully. The Qur’an does not describe a specific physical miracle for Dhul-Kifl. Therefore the chapter should say exactly that. Prophethood itself is based on revelation and Allah’s choice, but we should not create a miracle scene that no authentic source gives.

❓ Does the Qur’an describe a specific physical miracle for Dhul-Kifl?

The central character lesson is patience. What does patience look like in a child’s life? Finishing homework even when a game is more exciting. Waiting for a turn. Controlling anger when a sibling is annoying. Practicing Qur’an recitation when a verse is difficult. Telling the truth when lying would seem easier.

Righteousness is the second lesson. Righteousness is not one giant heroic moment. It is built from repeated good choices.

❓ What is righteousness built from according to the text?

For illustrations, use symbolic old-world scenes rather than invented events: an ancient road stretching toward the horizon; a simple oil lamp beside a parchment with the word “patience” shown only in the app overlay, not generated into the art; a date palm surviving harsh desert weather; a balanced stack of stones; and a sunrise after a long night.

A fun challenge can be called “The Patience Minute.” Children sit quietly for sixty seconds without touching the screen, then answer: What did you notice? The exercise makes patience physical and memorable.

Another activity is “Truth or Tradition?” The app presents statements such as “The Qur’an calls Dhul-Kifl patient” and “We know the exact palace where Dhul-Kifl lived.” Children identify which statement is established.

This chapter can also explain why some stories are much longer than others. Allah chose what details to preserve in revelation. A believer does not measure a prophet’s importance by the number of pages available about him.

❓ How should a believer measure a prophet's importance?

Dhul-Kifl’s short Qur’anic footprint becomes a powerful lesson in intellectual humility. Children learn that faith and careful evidence belong together.

The final message is: **When the truth gives us only a few facts, we protect those facts instead of decorating them with guesses.**

✨ Miracle Spotlight

No specific physical miracle is described for Dhul-Kifl in the Qur’an. Do not invent one.

🌙 Pause & Imagine

Close your eyes for ten seconds and imagine the environment from this story without imagining the prophet’s appearance. What do you hear: wind, animals, water, tools, footsteps, or a busy marketplace? What colors would the sky, stone, sand, wood, or plants have looked like? The goal is to enter the setting while keeping the prophet respectfully unseen.

💡 Did You Know?

Prophetic stories in the Qur’an are not arranged as one ordinary history textbook. The same prophet may appear in several surahs, with each passage highlighting a different lesson. That is why good storytelling should connect verses carefully instead of pretending every detail appears in one place.

    🌟 Famous Stories

The Man of the Pledge ❔ Traditional report

Reported in classical tafsir (Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari)

The story of how Prophet Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) got his name is a powerful lesson in keeping promises. It is said that an elderly prophet wanted to choose someone to lead the people after him. He announced to his followers, "Who will volunteer to fast every day, pray every night, and never get angry?" It was a very difficult challenge, and most people stayed quiet.

But one young man stood up and said he would do it. The old prophet asked again the next day, and again on the third day, to make sure. Each time, the very same young man was the only one to accept the heavy responsibility. Seeing his determination, the prophet chose him as the new leader for the Children of Israel.

Because this righteous man took on this pledge, or "kifl," he became known as Dhul Kifl, which means "The Possessor of the Pledge" or "The One of the Portion." He spent his life fulfilling these promises to Allah, serving his people with great patience and justice, just as he had sworn he would.

💡 Lesson: Keeping a difficult promise for the sake of Allah shows great strength and righteousness.

The Test of Anger ❔ Traditional report

Reported in classical tafsir (Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari)

After Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) promised to never get angry, Shaytan decided to test him. Shaytan knew that the prophet prayed all night and only took a short nap in the middle of the day. So, he disguised himself as a poor old man and knocked on the door right when Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) was about to rest.

The man claimed he had been wronged by his people and began telling a long, confusing story. He did this on purpose to annoy the prophet and make him angry. Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) listened patiently and told the man to come to his court when he was judging cases. The next day, the man came back at the same time and did the same thing. Again, the prophet was patient and told him to come to the court, but the man never showed up.

On the third day, Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) locked his door to rest. But Shaytan was so determined that he climbed the wall and appeared inside the room! The prophet was startled, but he did not get angry. He immediately recognized his enemy. Shaytan had to admit that he had failed. Dhul Kifl (peace be upon him) had passed the test, proving his incredible self-control.

💡 Lesson: Patience and self-control are powerful tools against the tricks of Shaytan.
